St. Martin's Day

In memory of the times  when vineyards were common in the area of Blejski kot and its environs, a vine was again planted at Bled Castle in 2011, on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of its first written mention.

Next to the entrance to the castle museum now grows a scion of the Old Vine from Lent (Maribor). The confirmed age of over 400 years has earned the Old Vine a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest vine still bearing grapes. Growing at an altitude of 599 m, the scion is an ethnographic reminder that wine-growing was once an important part of Bled's cultural landscape.

The vine is thriving under care, providing Bled Castle with ample reason to celebrate S. Martin's Day. Tastings of wines from Slovenia's many wine-growing regions, traditional St. Martin's Day dishes cooked at the castle restaurant, and a wide range of events held in honour of the patron saint of wine are a perfect excuse to take a tour of the castle's wine cellar, well-stocked with finest Slovenian wines.
