HISTORY
Gothic Lines, Baroque Splendor
The chapel was built in the 16th century in the Gothic style and was initially simpler, later undergoing multiple reconstructions and enhancements. Following a devastating earthquake in 1690, it was raised and a Baroque vault was added. It was during this period that the frescoes still decorating its interior today were created. For centuries, the chapel served as a place of worship for the castle's inhabitants. Its significance is also reflected by the coats of arms of the Brixen archdiocese and the noble Gallenfels family above the chapel entrance.
Architecture and art
The chapel combines its original Gothic design with later Baroque additions, giving it a unique artistic character. The interior is adorned with Baroque frescoes, whose bright colors and rich motifs reflect spirituality and historical milestones. On the north wall is a depiction of Emperor Henry II, who in the year 1004 donated the Bled estate to Saint Albuin, the bishop of Brixen, while his wife, Saint Cunigunde, is depicted on the south wall.
The paintings and details reflect the influences of Tyrolean ecclesiastical art, which also left its mark on other sacred buildings in the area. The painted coats of arms and symbols present at the entrance and on the walls further emphasize its connection to the Diocese of Brixen and the significance of the castle setting. This blend of architectural styles creates an atmosphere that is both respectful of the past and appealing to the modern visitor.
THE CHAPEL TODAY
A place of love and festive spirit
Today, the chapel successfully blends its historical and religious role with modern functions. On April 10, 2014, it was reconsecrated during the Bled Municipal Holiday by Ljubljana Bishop Andrej Glavan and Bolzano-Brixen Bishop Dr. Ivo Muser, restoring its original purpose as a place of prayer and spirituality. Thanks to its intimate and sacred atmosphere, it is a popular location for wedding ceremonies, offering couples an unforgettable start to their journey together. During Advent, the chapel traditionally hosts artistically crafted nativity scenes that, through their symbolism and imagery, create a festive ambiance.
