TREASURES OF WINEMAKING TRADITION
The wine cellar
Carved into the rock on which Bled Castle stands, the castle wine cellar offers visitors a glimpse into the rich tradition of Slovenian winemaking. In a medieval setting, more than twenty types of wine from the Vipava Valley wine region are available. In addition to tastings, visitors can learn about traditional wine bottling methods using oak barrels and discover the customs that have shaped Slovenia's viticultural heritage.
Castle vine: A symbol of tradition and heritage
A special cultural monument has also found its home at Bled Castle – the castle vine, a descendant of the world’s oldest grapevine, which has been thriving in Maribor for over 450 years. Grapevines were part of the region's winemaking tradition in the past, and today this one proudly grows near the entrance to the museum. At Bled Castle, the vine flourishes at an altitude of 599 meters above sea level, which is quite rare. The unique location significantly influences the quality and characteristics of the grapes. Some even say the castle vine has extended its roots all the way to Lake Bled, drawing water from it, which is why it bears such abundant fruit.
The castle vine is a living monument to tradition and heritage, bearing witness to centuries of grape cultivation in this specific climatic environment.
