HISTORY CARVED IN STONE

Lapidarium and stone table

The lapidarium in the upper courtyard of Bled Castle is a space where the past comes to life in stone. Here, stone artifacts and architectural elements are displayed, telling stories from centuries of castle history.

A special highlight is the marble table made from the renowned Hotavlje marble, sourced from the Poljane Valley. In its stone, where a snail fossil is clearly visible, millions of years of natural history are reflected. Hotavlje marble, used in Slovenian architecture for over 300 years, also adorns the most iconic buildings in our cities.

The table at Bled Castle is not just a functional object, but a symbol connecting nature, humanity, and centuries of history. It is a piece of heritage that can be touched, felt, and in which stories are inscribed—petrified in time.

A VIEW INTO THE PAST AND THE FUTURE

Castle wall

From the castle wall, a stunning view opens onto the surrounding villages, including Zasip and Gorje, which can be admired in all their picturesque beauty. Zasip was famously called the “altar of Gorenjska” by Slovenia’s greatest poet, Dr. France Prešeren, due to its unforgettable view of Lake Bled and the wider landscape.

Today’s castle wall still bears traces of its oldest form – part of the Romanesque wall with a mighty entrance tower has been preserved, welcoming visitors for centuries. From the defensive corridor, narrow arrow slits reveal views of the peaks of the Karawanks and Mežakla, which on summer mornings act as a natural clock, lit by the rising sun.

The castle wall offers more than just a glimpse into the past – it is a place where history and nature intertwine into a unique experience, allowing visitors to feel the grandeur of the castle fortification and the unspoiled beauty of its surroundings.

PIONEER OF NATURAL HEALING

Arnold Rikli's room

On the third floor of the Renaissance round tower is a space dedicated to one of the most influential figures in the history of Bled tourism – Arnold Rikli. The Swiss healer transformed Bled into a world-renowned health resort in the second half of the 19th century and, through his methods of natural healing, paved the way for modern wellness.

Rikli’s philosophy was based on the belief that nature and simple living are the keys to health. His methods included sun and air baths, healthy nutrition, and movement in nature, which attracted many distinguished guests from across Europe.

The exhibition in the Arnold Rikli room introduces visitors to his work and his impact on the development of spa tourism in Bled. Interactive displays and historical documents showcase how wellness methods evolved over the centuries and how profoundly his work shaped Bled’s identity as one of Europe’s leading wellness destinations.

INDULGENCE WITH A VIEW

Coffeeshop

In the lower courtyard of the castle, visitors are welcomed by the castle coffeeshop, where history blends with top-tier cuisine. Here, you can indulge in tastings of premium Slovenian wines, craft beers, and homemade beverages that offer an authentic experience of local flavors.

During the summer months, refreshments include homemade lemonades, iced teas, and custom-made ice creams, while in the colder seasons, the coffeeshop pampers guests with aromatic coffee and, of course, the Bled queen – the famous cream cake. A visit to the coffeeshop is not only a culinary delight but also an opportunity to admire one of the most beautiful views of Lake Bled and its island.

The castle coffeeshop is open from May to November and invites all who wish to combine gourmet indulgence with the fairytale ambiance of Bled Castle.

A TRIBUTE TO SLOVENIAN BEEKEEPING TRADITION

Castle Beehouse

Slovenia is a land of beekeeping, and the Gorenjska region is a special home to the native Carniolan honeybee, known for its diligence and remarkable adaptability. At Bled Castle, this rich heritage is preserved in the Castle Beehouse – a boutique shop where visitors can discover the world of honey and beekeeping through tastings, stories, and unique products.

The beehive offers free tastings of more than 20 types of honey, a wide selection of high-quality Slovenian honey products, and handcrafted souvenirs that represent authentic Slovenian craftsmanship. A distinctive feature of the space is its interior, designed in the shape of a beehive, symbolizing connection, hard work, and the richness of nature.

The Castle Beehouse is more than just a shop – it is an experience space where you can discover the sweetness of nature, learn about the history of Slovenian beekeeping, and take home the true taste of Slovenia.

A WALK THROUGH HISTORY BENEATH THE CASTLE WALL

Castle park

The castle park beneath Bled Castle is a modernly designed space that connects rich history with the natural landscape. During its renovation, archaeological excavations revealed remains from various historical periods, including prehistoric tools, Roman coins, and medieval structures, confirming that the castle hill has been inhabited for thousands of years.

The park is designed in terraces that follow the natural terrain, allowing visitors to stroll among stone walls, gravel paths, and scenic viewpoints overlooking Lake Bled. A highlight of the park is a viewing platform located near the reconstructed remains of a former pavilion or chapel. The walking paths are equipped with wooden benches and subtle lighting that highlights the park's architectural features.
